Cowboy Poets of Utah
Date: August 13, 2005
Location: Frontier Villiage Restaurant - Richfield, Utah
1. Sam welcomed all those who attended the breakfast hosted by the CPU
2. Old minutes were reviewed and accepted
Ken Romriell was remembered. He was recently at the Elsinore Danish Days.
3. FISCAL YEAR CHANGE - discussion
It was discussed and decided that our “year" of membership would be from
March 1 to February 28 (29th?)
This would allow for current members to be “paid up" and eligible for the
CPU General Membership meeting and/or elections to be held at the Sevier Valley
Round-up (in August) each year. Motion made by Val, second by Linda Patterson.
4. ASSISTANT SECRETARY - discussion
It was discussed that JoLynne Kirkwood could use an assistant to take notes
at meetings and assist in other items of business. JoLynne would then be able
to devote time to the Newsletter while the assistant could work on minutes of
meetings, mailings of notifications, etc. The motion was made by Jerry Brooks
and passed.
Discussion by the group made mention how Keri Carter (Val’s wife) was always
to the meetings, events and programs in support of not only Val, but the CPU as
a whole. Marion Manwill nominated Keri Carter for the position of Assistant
Secretary, with the description of her duties to be established, but not limited
to taking minutes of meetings. Nomination was seconded by Todd Nail, carried.
5. AREA REPRESENTATIVES -
Marion Manwill asked who the area reps were and what the areas were. It was
discussed that there are currently five areas of the state with two reps from
each area. This can and would be changed when membership grows and more reps
are needed. The next newsletter will again outline the areas and their reps.
6. OUT OF STATE REPS -
Colon Sweeten brought to discussion the fact the Cowboy Poets of Idaho have
out of state representatives. It was noted that Gene Jones, Malad Idaho, is on
the board, but discussion was that maybe a more visible representative was
needed.
7. NEW MEMBERS -
Linda Patterson was in attendance to the meeting and is one of the newest
members of the CPU. She will soon be moving to Price, Utah, and is very willing
to be a liaison for that area. She will let us know her address as soon as she
moves.
8. NATIONAL COWBOY DAY -
It was noted that the Senate set aside July 23 of each year as NATIONAL
COWBOY DAY in support of the impact the cowboy made on the western United
States. (Terri Taylor adds the following per the article she read concerning
NATIONAL COWBOY DAY,..... “THE RESOLUTION CITES July 23rd, 2005, as the first
observable date. That was the 4th Saturday in July and the intention has been
that each year the National Day will be observed on the 4th Saturday of that
month." Thanks, Terri)
9. ROD MILLER
Rod was acknowledged and congratulated for having one book published and one
more being published in the spring of 2006. He has conducted many workshops of
writing of poetry and cowboy poetry.
10. BARBARA HALL - discussion
Barbara brought to everyone’s attention the need to be very careful of the
material used while giving cowboy poetry. At times, cowboy poetry has been
given a bad reputation because some continue to present “bar room" material in a
family oriented program. We should all use good taste in the material given.
11. VOTING RESULTS -
Ballots for Chairman of the Board and CPU President were counted and
announced.
Chairman of the Board - Curly Syndergaard
CPU President - Sam DeLeeuw
12. OPEN POSITION
There is an open position on the board and will be named as the Chairman of
the Board selects someone to fill that position.
Current Board: Gene Jones, Malad, Idaho; Terri Taylor, West Haven, Utah;
Don Kennington, Ogden, Utah. Chairman of the Board, Curly Syndergaard, Paragona,
Utah
submitted:
Sam DeLeeuw
